Hollywood Writers Strike Ends with Surprisingly Reasonable AI Agreement

It was the longest strike to date, but now it’s over. Here’s a pretty good summary of the agreement.

Of course, I like to think that the withering pressure of the threat to replace studio execs with AI had something to do with it. 🙂

As far as AI goes, the basic agreement seems reasonable:

  • AI-generated material will not be considered source material under the MBA, and thus won’t affect writing credits and related rights
  • Writers may choose to use AI in their work (with consent and within company guidelines) but they can’t be forced to do so
  • If a company hands off an AI-generated script to a writer, they need to disclose it as such
  • The guild is reserving the right to later argue against using Guild materials to train AI

This is only one small skirmish amidst the backdrop of major battles to come.
